What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma, otherwise known as “Kala Motia” is an eye disease in which there is an increase in pressure inside the eye. Just as some people have high blood pressure, in the same way a glaucoma patient has high eye pressure. If the eye pressure remains high for a long time it damages the optic nerve which carries the light sense from the eye to the brain. This damage to the nerve is irreversible and leads to permanent and incurable blindness. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world with 70 to 105 million people affected worldwide (WHO).

What are the symptoms of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is often referred to as a “silent thief of vision” as it can strike without any symptoms. However, some glaucoma patients may suffer symptoms like:

  • Severe eye pain in case of angle-closure glaucoma
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent changes of reading glasses

What are the risk factors of Glaucoma?

Everyone is at risk of getting affected by Glaucoma. But certain risk factors for the disease are:

  • High intraocular pressure
  • Age – risk increases with age, especially those beyond 40 years of age
  • Heredity – Primary open-angle glaucoma affects those with a family history of glaucoma
  • Ethnicity – Glaucoma is common among Asians, Africans, Americans, and Hispanics.
  • Sustained eye injury – in such cases, glaucoma can occur immediately after the injury or even in later years
  • High myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disease
  • Hypertension
  • Steroids intake

Retinal diseases vary widely – some are common and easily treatable. A significant percentage of retinal blindness is due to Diabetic Retinopathy. India is called as “World Diabetes Capital”, it is estimated that 50 million people are living with diabetes. It is estimated that 15 to 25% of the diabetic population have diabetic retinopathy (blindness caused by diabetes), and everyone has the potential to develop it over a period of time. West Bengal is ranked as the 4th Indian state with highest DR population.

LSEH was the first eye hospital of this region to set up a dedicated department of medical retina in 2018. The department is regularly carrying out treatments procedure to the patients of the region.

  • Frequent changes in their glass prescription

  • Problems with cornea

Why You Should Go for Routine Eye Check Ups?

Getting an annual eye exam is a crucial part of ensuring good eye health for yourself and your loved ones. The benefits of regular eye checkups go beyond preventing eye-related complication as it also helps in diagnosis underlying health conditions at early stages. This way, you can start early treatments and lower the risks of complications.

What are refractive errors?

In order for anybody to see clearly, the light that enters the eye must precisely focus on the retina, the portion at the back of the eyes that are composed of light-sensitive cells. The two parts of the eyes, lens and cornea, play an important role in focusing light rays on the retina. The presence of a refractive error is felt when the light does not precisely focus on the retina.

Causes of refractive errors

Just like the symptoms, causes of refractive errors vary. Myopia commonly occurs when the eye’s refractive power is too strong. A longer length of the eyeball axis is another important cause of myopia.
Hyperopia can occur when the length of the eyeball axis is short. The refractive error can also occur when the eye has a weak refractive power. Astigmatism often occurs due to abnormal curvature of the cornea. In many cases, refractive error is inherited; meaning if you or your spouse has a refractive error, your child is likely to develop the condition.

Treatment of refractive errors

Eye doctors usually prescribe eyeglasses in order to temporarily correct refractive errors. Prescription eyeglasses are often the preferred refractive error correction option for patients.

What is Cataract?

A cataract is clouding of the eye’s natural lens. It is a natural process of aging. Every individual gets it sooner or later. Cataract impairs focusing of light on the retina and hence blurs vision.

What are the casus of Cataract?

Old age is the most common cause of cataracts. It also sometimes occurs relatively early in life due to factors such as injury, excessive sunlight, toxic chemicals, changes in the body’s metabolism, drugs, or other eye diseases, such as glaucoma and inflammation.

What are the symptoms of a Cataract?

People with cataract, even when wearing glasses, typically have:

  • Glare at night

  • Difficulty in recognizing colours

  • Foggy/smoky vision

  • Frequent changes in their glass prescription

What is the treatment for Cataract?

There are no medicines with proven efficacy to prevent or to treat cataract. The only effective treatment is the surgical removal of cataracts. Diabetes, hypertension and other general health problems are not a contraindication for cataract surgery. The cataract need not ‘mature’ for surgery

When is Cataract surgery advised?

The decision to treat a cataract is made together by the eye care practitioner and the patient. It is based on the degree to which the cataract is impairing vision and the effect of the impairment on the patient’s quality of life. Modern cataract surgery can be performed successfully in any season including summers and the rainy season. Delay in cataract surgery may increase the risk of complication during surgery. Surgery should be done as soon as the patient experiences problems in daily activities due to the dimness in vision

What is ptosis of the eye?

Droopy eyelid is called ptosis. It can occur due to trauma, age, or various medical disorders. When it affects one eye it is referred to as unilateral and when it affects both eyes it is called bilateral ptosis.

What causes ptosis in one eye?

What are the causes ptosis in both the eyes?

If both the eyelids are drooping, it can be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Stroke, brain tumour, or cancer of the nerves or muscles is some of the medical conditions that can lead to ptosis on both the eyes.

What are the symptoms of ptosis?

The main symptom of ptosis is a drooping eyelid. The condition is not painful but it can obstruct the vision. Along with droopy eyelids, the eyes are either extremely dry or watery.  The area around the eyes may experience aching, giving a tired look. Those with severe ptosis will have to lift their heads to see better.

Educate Yourself on Colour Blindness

A greater part of the process in which the eyes perceive colour, depends on how healthy the cones are. Cones, located in the retina, are photoreceptor cells which contain pigments that react to a different wavelength of light. In other words, they are responsible for coloured vision.

Unfortunately, not all eyes have healthy cones and, therefore, they face difficulty in colour perception. This condition is described as colour blindness.

If you cannot read some or any of the above characters, you may have colour blindness. If you face difficulty in making out the differences between different colours, make sure to get your eyes checked.
